I fix this snappy salad for myself whenever I have a taste for it. The crisp ingredients and sweet-and-sour dressing are irresistible.—Denise Albers, Freeburg, Illinois


  • 1 pound bacon strips, chopped
  • 1 medium head cabbage, shredded
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon celery seed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup white vinegar


  1. In a large skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove to paper towel with a slotted spoon. Add onion to drippings in skillet. Cook and stir until tender 3-5 minutes. Add sugar, vinegar, salt and celery seed. Cook and stir until sugar is disolved. Add cabbage; cook and stir until cabbage is crisp-teneder, x-x minutes. Serve immediately.
