Buttery Orange Sugar Cookies

My husband's grandmother made a variety of cookies every year for her grandkids at Christmastime. She would box them up and give each child his or her own box. This crisp, orange flavored cookie is one of my favorites from her collection.—Heather McKillip, Aurora, Illinois

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 teaspoons grated orange zest
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup rye flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in orange zest and vanilla. In another bowl, whisk remaining ingredients; gradually beat into creamed mixture.
  • Shape level tablespoons of dough into balls; place 2 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake 10-12 minutes or until edges are light brown. Cool on pans 2 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool. Store in airtight containers.
