The crumb topping of this apple crumble pie recipe is awesome, which may explain why dessert always disappears fast. Or maybe it's the chunky apple filling. Either way, it's a family tradition. —Vera Brouwer, Maurice, Iowa

Ingredients

  • Dough for single-crust pie
  • TOPPING:
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
  • FILLING:
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 5 cups chopped peeled tart apples (about 5 medium)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to a 1/8-in.-thick circle; transfer to a 9-in. pie plate. Trim crust to 1/2 in. beyond rim of plate; flute edge. Refrigerate while preparing topping and filling.
  2. For topping, in a small bowl, mix sugar and flour; cut in butter until crumbly. For filling, in a large bowl, mix sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add apples and toss to coat. Transfer to crust. Sprinkle with topping.
  3. Bake 10 minutes. Reduce oven setting to 375°. Bake until topping is browned and apples are tender, 40-45 minutes. Cover edge loosely with foil during the last 15 minutes if needed to prevent overbrowning. Cool on a wire rack.
Apple Crumble Pie Tips

What kind of apples can you use to make apple crumble pie?

You want an apple that will not turn mushy or break down too much while it bakes. We recommend Golden Delicious or Granny Smith apples for baking because their flesh stays intact even after they are baked. Check out all the ways you can cook with apples for your next meal!

How can you make apple crumble pie your own?

Instead of apples, you can try using pears for a fun new spin. You can also play around with different spices such as ground ginger, cardamom, or cloves that will still provide that classic, warm spice flavoring that's classic to fall desserts.

How should you store apple crumble pie?

After the pie is baked and cooled, it will stay fresh for 3 to 4 days stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. You can also opt to freeze it, just plan on eating it within 2 months. Here are some more of our best apple desserts to try next!
