If you’ve ever made an avocado recipe that only called for a portion of the creamy green treat, you know that storing the remaining half often results in an icky, brown mess. Now, there’s a genius cheap kitchen gadget that preserves every last bite of that half-eaten avocado.

This avocado keeper is a compact kitchen storage container designed to hold leftover avocado—and Amazon reviewers can’t stop talking about it. So, I had to try it for myself to see if the product’s raves were warranted.

What is an avocado keeper?

This compact avocado keeper is a dishwasher-safe produce saver on Amazon that’s specially designed for storing half of an avocado for days, sparing it from turning brown while also sparing your wallet. Not to mention, it beats alternative avocado storage methods, such as plastic wrap or aluminum foil.

A clear lid snaps onto the airtight, plastic avocado keeper that holds half of an average-size fruit. Once it’s sealed, the container prevents air from sneaking in so that oxidation is less likely to occur, which is what causes deliciously green avocados to turn brown. The keeper locks in freshness, keeping avocados in prime condition for making homemade guacamole or avocado toast. (Speaking of freshness, you need to try the Guac Lock, too.)

This gadget’s affordable price and its easy-to-clean plastic have made it an instant hit—but it’s the money shoppers have saved on wasted brown avocados that catapulted the avocado keeper to over 6,000 ratings and a 4.1-star average on Amazon. It’s the perfect addition to your collection of produce savers, including garlic keepers, potato storage containers and onion storage containers. Or, add it to any avocado lover’s kitchen as a hostess gift or a gift for cooks.

Avocado Keeper Product Features

The avocado keeper is as straightforward as can be, and that’s certainly part of its appeal. With a bright-green plastic base and a clear plastic lid, this product is made up of just two parts that seamlessly slide together. The lid is fairly deep, and the base is generously sized, so most varieties of avocados can fit inside.

Notably, this handy little tool is dishwasher-safe, so if some of the flesh of the avocado smears onto the bottom or excess condensation builds up in the lid, simply toss it in with your other plates and bowls.

How We Tested the Avocado Keeper

Avocado Keeper testAnnamarie Higley/Taste of Home

I’m an avocado advocate, so when I was asked to test this product, I jumped at the chance. They’re almost always a part of my meal prep. This week, I made Creamy White Chicken Chili, which I top generously with diced avocados—as I do with every southwestern soup. Even as I was pulling the seasonings from my spice storage to doctor up my chili, all I was really thinking about was the fresh, creamy green garnish to come.

Although I do place a heaping handful atop each bowl, I still use only about half of an avocado. So, the other half, of course, went into my trusty new avocado keeper for use the next night.

The lid slid into the base very snugly, which made me feel confident in the keeper’s purported airtightness. Then, I stored it in my refrigerator for the next 18 hours. When I pulled it out, the lid had collected a bit of condensation, so I was delighted to see that my avocado had minimally browned. (If I’d wanted to prevent this further, I could’ve drizzled a bit of lemon juice over the flesh before storing.) The fruit was still totally edible and primed for that night’s soup. Score! This kitchen storage accessory is a definite must.

Should you put the avocado keeper in the fridge?

Avocado Keeper in the fridgeAnnamarie Higley/Taste of Home

Although the Amazon product page doesn’t explicitly state to place the filled avocado keeper in the refrigerator, this step is essential for success. The chill of the fridge slows the ripening process and helps the avocado maintain its freshness for longer.

How do I keep avocados from turning brown?

There are a number of ways to prevent avocados from browning, and this avocado keeper is probably the best place to start. If you’re simply looking for at-home methods or to supplement this keeper, try sealing the avocado with plastic wrap, brushing the flesh with citrus juice or storing it alongside chopped onion. Regardless of which of the three methods you choose, the prepared avocado should then be placed in the fridge.

How long can you keep avocados?

Try all we might, but avocados will brown eventually. Even the most effective storing methods won’t keep sliced or halved avocados fresh for more than a couple days in the refrigerator. Whole ripe avocados, on the other hand, can be stored in the refrigerator up to five days. Note: Don’t place overly firm avocados in the fridge because they won’t ripen properly. Instead, leave them on the counter until they’re at their peak, then toss in the crisper to eat in the coming days.

What Amazon Reviewers Had to Say

We’re not the only guac lovers smitten with the avocado keeper. Thousands of happy Amazon customers consider it a staple in their kitchens.

Amazon reviewer, Nicholas Calderone, says, “I just ordered a new fridge, so I thought I would look to see if I could find new food containers to keep things fresh and my fridge looking spotless. That’s when I came across this. It’s been perfect.”

“I was so sick of the kids wrapping half an avocado in plastic wrap,” writes verified Amazon purchaser, NagMini. “I had a half dozen lying around the fridge because they just threw them anywhere. Now, this is the only place they go. No waste, no extra plastic, and keeps them fresh.”

M. Harrington-Terry gives the avocado keeper five stars, adding, “I didn’t realize how often I only use half of an avocado. I wanted something that didn’t end up in the garbage. This works well. I can put a half avocado with a pit in it in the container, and it closes. The avocado stays fresh until I want to use the other half.”

Final Verdict

As Amazon user, Sam, points out, “You’re not going to find a magical device that keeps an avocado green for multiple days. This product works great if you have realistic expectations for your avocados!” And Sam is right. One can dream! But this avocado keeper does one of the best jobs I’ve seen.

My avocado was still in great shape after nearly 24 hours. Plus, I simply cannot discount how much eco-friendlier (and more effective) this avocado keeper is than constantly relying on plastic wrap. It’s straightforward to use and easy to clean—it’s an all-around great gadget for your stash. If avocados are often in your fruit bowl, I can assure you it’s well worth the $16.

Next up, let’s work on storing your spices.
